APRIL 13-17- After ELA MCAS and before April Vacation, 5S had a chance to do the following:
--- We focused on energy by creating human circuits with energy sticks
---- We also had two special guests come in for 'What's My Work'.
Rohan's mom, Sadhna Brown, taught us about architecture in colonial times and Katherine's Dad, Rob Hillman, came in to teach us about public finance and how tax can be allocated.
--- We also watched a 1988 made for TV movie called April Morning about the events that began the American Revolution.
Then we headed out for April Break.
On March 31st, 5S Hosted Community Meeting!

Driscoll Had Two Days of Arts Equinox! March 23 & 24, 2017
Dance Party, Totems, 3D Birds, Kids for Kids, Circuit Drawing, Sign Language Singing, Recycled Fashion and Closing Ceremony! Lots of art, lots of movement, lots of mess, lots of fun.
3/20/17- On the first day of spring, Noa played our sun and we reviewed the revolution of the earth around the sun! Then we went out to measure our shadows. The weather was beautiful, but in true March fashion, snow was still on the ground. As many students predicted, their shadows were close in size to their own heights... EQUInox!
3/16/17: Snow days can delay...
but they cannot thwart pie-pi day in 5S
5S learned the first 26 digits of pi from a catchy (almost too catchy) song...

3/13/17 - Before switching teams, 5S looked into the eyes of a teammate and drew what they saw!
*note: my (Ms. S) cell phone/camera was making things blurry that day, which was a little ironic based on the topic...
5S attempted to take photos of old teams before going into new teams... we didn't accomplish our goal, but had some fun along the way... 5S then went into new teams to make new teams and design posters...
3/3/17- This week after the Sugar Act, Stamp act, Townsend Act, Quartering Act (also known as Intolerable Acts) all led to the final act... one of defiance! When 5S heard that Royal Governess Stark decided to name our River Table the King George English Village, instead of American Dream, they couldn't take it any more and protests erupted!

Busy week coming back from February Break: It was filled with English taxes and shillings , impromptu photos of "Alexander Hamilton ( aka Nate), filming mashup and skits using ipads, learning Mission U.S. and waiting to hear "music to my ears".

5S USES ALL THEIR CLUES AND COMPLIMENTS TO GUESS THEIR SECRET AMIGOS!
Writing and then Reading Persuasive Paragraphs
About What to Name Our River Table!
Rolling from January into February, 5S created experiments to test whether or golf ball or marble would go farther off of a ramp.
The D.C. Eagles have landed! Ms. Stark took these 3 screen shots from the live cam- http://www.dceaglecam.org/ on 1/7/17 at 4:34 p.m. 5S is following this eagle couple 'Mr. President and First Lady' as part of our bird study and observations. Last year, they laid two eggs that were hatched in February. We will watch them closely this year to see what happens.

The grass grew the most during the school day while we were in class. It liked all the energy. The photos show the rapid pace of grass growth.

HALLOWEEN & BIRD WATCHING - Below, you can see some photos of October 31st and some shots of 5S as we watched some amazing bird movies created by PBS/Nature. We watched the extraordinary 'Owl Power' movie and, during track and field, we watched one about hummingbirds. Up next, our bird of the month is the Wild Turkey. We will be watching an eye opening movie by PBS called, My Life as a Turkey. Stay tuned.
Each Day 5S has themes- Monday Muse, Tuesday Newsday, Wednesday Web-nesday , Thursday Words Day and Friday Try-day
Each day there is a headline story, often related to themes - See whiteboards below.
Each day also has a color associated with it- Monday=green because starting fresh, Tuesday=blue becauseTuesday-bluesday rhyme, Wednesday=Red because webneday and rednesday rhyme, Thursday=purple because Thursday and purple have assonance and Friday = orange because we say, 'Orange you glad it's Friday?'

We have a "Muse Spot" in the Driscoll bird sanctuary where we can observe changes in nature and search for inspiration for our writing. Is there a spot at home where you like to go to feel inspired? We also received an unexpected visit from Ms. Stark's dog, Mango!
We BEGIN...
We had a field trip on the first day of school... to the field! There we got some fresh air and exercise to avoid the dreaded Meetingitis. We also had our first math class by estimating the length and width of the Driscoll field. What would be your estimate?
We made name tags and had our first class meeting. A wonderful group of human beings!

DAY 2!
We began to think about what it's like to be... in the shoes of 5SP! We started to design our shoe posters! We also began to estimate the length of our classroom and the length of our line if we all lay down.
